A moving-box system that survives the move
Number the boxes, photograph what goes inside, and find your charger without unpacking the entire room.

Give every box one clear identity
“Kitchen” is helpful until you have twelve boxes labeled kitchen. Use a unique number and a destination together: Box 07 — Kitchen. Write the label on the top and at least one side so it is visible when boxes are stacked. Keep the same number throughout the move; changing names halfway makes your inventory harder to trust.
Create a simple list of boxes before packing. You can use a notebook or an inventory app such as StuffID. In the app, create a storage space for the move and a separate box within it for each numbered container. Matching the physical label to the saved name matters more than designing a perfect numbering system.
Photograph before you close the lid
Arrange the contents so the important objects are visible, then take a photo before adding the last layer of packing material. If a box has several layers, photograph each layer. A picture of a sealed cardboard lid cannot tell you what is inside, and AI cannot identify an object completely hidden beneath another one.
Review any suggested item names before saving. Add the terms you will actually remember when looking for something: “laptop charger,” “adjustable wrench,” or “coffee filters.” Keep accessories with the object they belong to when practical, and record any small pouch or inner container in the location.
Keep the first night separate
Pack a clearly marked first-night bag or box for things you will want before unpacking properly: a phone charger, a change of clothes, basic toiletries, a towel and a few everyday kitchen essentials. Keep the bag accessible instead of letting it disappear into the main stack.
Carry travel and identity documents in an appropriate secure place rather than mixing them into general moving boxes. Your inventory can remind you where they are, but a label or photograph is not a substitute for keeping important originals safe.
Unpack the record as well as the box
At the new home, search for the item you need and open the matching box. When the item reaches its permanent drawer or shelf, update its location in StuffID. Otherwise, next month your inventory will still point to a box you already recycled.
Before marking a box finished, check that it is empty and that the saved locations of its important contents have changed. Keep partially unpacked boxes in the list until the remaining items have a home. A moving inventory earns its place when it continues to work after moving day.
